Giant Whale Sighted in Liverpool

July 30th, 2007 Posted by Andrea

Finished Liverpool

During our search for a suitable site in Liverpool it was genuinely exciting to experience first hand the mass urban regeneration that’s currently taking place in this amazing city. There’s a notable buzz in the air round these parts with so much going on in the run up to Liverpool being crowned City of Culture next year with new bars, eateries and galleries popping up all over the place.

Masses of lovely derelict buildings and textured walls called out to us, simply yearning for our attention. It wasn’t long before one particular site really caught my eye though and at the junction of Renshaw Street and Hardman Street lay the most beautiful canvas of all.

Sam paints in LiverpoolWhen Speto met Sam Skinner I just new that something great was about to take place. It was amazing to watch the piece evolve, changing considerably as it did many times before reaching its final incarnation. Mermaids and sails eventually gave way to the emergence of an enormous eight metre whale burping stars and riding a psychedelic wave of black and white tiles. All the while passers by could not resist stopping to take a peek at the wonder unfolding above them and even some time later as walked back to the train station I watched as the piece was met by one fixated gaze after another.

It made me feel so happy to have been a part of such an amazing project. A fantastic use of otherwise wasted space to bring a little cheer and turn a lot of heads. After all, massive whales in the centre of town aren’t exactly the norm are they?

Sam’s a good artist, but you seem to have confused street art with corporate advertising.
