Liver, language and the love of jazz

Nice bit of liverNice bit of liver, nice bit of jazz. This is my response to Ben Westbeach’s observation that this was pretty much the perfect night out for him.

A jazz band is playing a low-key but high quality set in the cozy Sao Christov bar in downtown Sao Paulo. I’m sitting with a group of people (artists and producers of Trocabrahma) who have probably heard more quality jazz bands in their time than most people and we’re all in agreement that this band is one of the best we’ve ever seen.

Four Tet & Open Field Church

I was born a mushroom head
(Four Tet meets Open Field Church)

Four Tet & Open Field ChurchBringing Kieran Hebden the genius behind Four Tet, into a studio in Sao Paulo to collaborate with, what is an intentionally atonal Brazilian choir, sounds nuts. After a lengthy debate about the “realness” of the TV programme Lost, Eduardo, Dago, and Kieran had decided on the tunes they thought would work well for their musical collaboration.

Football and fashion

funtimefrankieIt’s still raining, no wonder Paulistanos actually get stuff done. Blog blog blog, blah blah blah. Cheers Café keeps the caffeine coming and soon has me racing like Senna though and I power through my work to get off to Sao Christavo Bar in Vila Madalena.

Sao Christavo is this tiny little bar restaurant that is practically a shrine, a terreiro, to some Brasilian Candomble football deity. Every single inch of space is covered in programmes pictures newspaper clippings and a host of scarves from around the world suggest it’s a travelling football fan’s paradise. With horror I even see there is a Rangers season ticket… freshly up too. Now who could have left that there?

If it’s Sao Paulo, it must be TrocaBrahma

cheersIf it’s Sunday it must be Sao Paolo, and if it’s Sao Paolo it must be Trocabrahma. I explore Perdizes district a little further and find the little corner café deli shop and evidently, neighbourhood gossip centre all rolled into one. In Brasil these places are called lanchonetes: everybody knows everybody – its sort of like Cheers but with caffeine and cakes.

The first day in our lives in Sao Paulo

A city sceneWe arrived in several pieces off the redeye flight from Washington. Having negociated the customs circus we’re glad as girl guides at a cookiefest to see that Julio our guide has arrived to meet us.

Da dada dadaradara da dada dadaradara..

I’ve selected Aguarela Do Brasil as my theme tune and I samba my way through customs… after years of wondering and dreaming if it would ever happen, eu estou no brasil verdade!
